Arbor Specialties - Tree Care and Landscaping, South Shore MA
Arbor Specialties was started by Jim McGuire, a certified arborist and landscape professional. During his thirty years of working in the landscape and tree care industry, he gained experience in all aspects of landscape design, landscape construction, tree care and maintaining entire landscapes. Jim started working on Cape Cod caring for properties of summer residents while attending a vocational high school horticultural program. After completing his last year of high school and subsequently, a landscape design architecture program at Harvard University he began working for Acorn Landscape of East Dennis. He quickly became the landscape construction foreman, gaining more experience with hardscape construction, irrigation and planting.
Jim started with Hartney Greymont of Needham in 1985 as an Arborist Trainee, later became the Plant Health Care Manager, General Manager and eventually President of the employee owned company. Jim gained much of his tree care experience while working for twenty five years at Hartney Greymont. During his tenure at Hartney Greymont, he helped care for landscapes and trees on hundreds of residential and commercial properties all around Boston. During that time he was one of the first people to identify and treat for the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid in Norfolk County, managed the Boston Common Elm injection program, and assisted the Friends of Post Office Square to care for the trees in the downtown park. He also managed the Asian Long Horn Beetle injection program in Worcester for Hartney Greymont’s USDA contract in 2010. In 2010 Hartney Greymont was acquired by a large national tree care firm and in the Spring 2011 he left to start his own company closer to his home in Marshfield.
While working for Hartney Greymont Jim served on Association of Landscape Contractors of Massachusetts (ALCM) board of directors and as President. He also served on ALCM’s first certification committee and became one the first certified Landscape Professional in the State. He also served as the Tree Care Industry Association ANSI 300 Standards representative in 2004, where he helped to develop the first draft ANSI 300 Standard on transplanting trees.
